Barrackpore has a chequered history. During Aurangzeb's time this place was known as Barbakpur and majorly contributed to the collection of taxes. The British East India Company changed the name to Barrackpore with their troops stationed here in 1772, but prior to that place was known as Chanak as found in Manasa Mangal. The first war of Indian independence broke out when the first shot against the British was fired by Sepoy Mangal Pandey on 29th  March,1857 at this Barrackpore. Although little known, there was another mutiny, also in 1824, which was commanded by a Sepoy named Bindee Tiwary, famously called as Bindi Baba, in this illustrious place of Barrackpore. There is a mention of this place in the writings of the Greek navigators, geographers, chronicles and historians dating back between the first century B.C. and the third century A.D.
